4th of July: Everything you Need to Know to Keep your Dog Safe

Keep Them Inside

Many dogs run away during fireworks. Keeping them indoors muffles the noise and keeps them from running away when they’re scared.

Create a Safe Space

Create a safe space for your dog! Set up a room with their bed, crate, water, treats, and toys. If you are able to place them in a room without windows this will help muffle the sound even more. Turn on noise (tv, radio, fan) and close any curtains.

Make Sure they Have IDs

Get your pet microchipped beforehand! This ensures that even if they do somehow escape that they are more likely to be returned to you. Make sure that they are wearing a collar with identification tags, apple tag, FI tag, etc. Even placing a large piece of duct tape on their collar with your phone number could save their life!

Consider Meds/ Other

If you know that your dog is afraid of fireworks, find ways to support them beforehand. Many vets will recommend calming supplements or medications to help them get through these events. Other things that may help are a thunder vest, a hard-shell plastic crate, a happy hoodie, chew toys, etc.
